If 2020 taught us anything, some deus ex machina PC game will rescue us from a dull start to the year. Rust is making a good show of it so far, currently hitting all-time records for concurrent players off the back of popular streamers turning their eye toward it. The left field is wide open for something unexpected-even something old-to swoop in and capture our hearts. What's the next Phasmophobia, Among Us, or Genshin Impact? In 2019, Apex Legends fell out of the sky in February and instantly became one of the most popular games in the world. The good news is that, if the last 12 months have proven anything, we can't predict what's going to capture our collective interest and SSD space. Personally I'm waiting for a green light from someone on our team who's completed the game to let me know when another layer of polish or two has been added. Cyberpunk 2077 is doing just fine, averaging about as many players as Apex Legends on Steam in recent days, but one month later it feels like it's drifted outside our conversation. Many of us assumed Cyberpunk would be the next Grand Theft Auto, a permanent fixture that captured our attention for months as various Vs crawled Night City's sprawl. The other recent event at work here is the deflating release of Cyberpunk 2077, a game that cast such a skyscrapingly tall shadow that I think we ignored what was on the other side of it. Gotham Knights (Image credit: Warner Bros.) Many of the bigger games of the year-Resident Evil Village, Gotham Knights, Dying Light 2, Age of Empires 4, Far Cry 6-are still without clear release dates, and I suspect one or two of them could miss 2021 altogether. An extra measure of understanding and patience is warranted. We can't ignore the influence of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed dozens of projects last year and is understandably continuing to impact the post-holiday calendar. This isn't meant as an ungrateful criticism against the gaming industry. The next three months pale when compared to, say, April 2020, when we got Gears Tactics, Cloudpunk, XCOM: Chimera Squad, SnowRunner, Streets of Rage 4, and the Resident Evil 3 remake. Even if we don't know their release dates, there's a greater chance of something like Evil Genius 2 or Boyfriend Dungeon sneaking into March than something from Ubisoft.īut given that we're living in something like a six-year golden age for our hobby, I'm underwhelmed by what I see in front of me. Aside from what's noted above, I'm curious about Nebuchadnezzar, a city builder game about ancient Mesopotamia. There are promising games on the way from smaller studios. I loved trading out my head for a zombie head only to discover it took away a life cube in the process. If 2020 proved anything, it's that we can't predict what's going to capture our collective interest. In Skellboy Refractured, it IS your body. On most RPGs, the inventory is on your body. One of my favorite mechanics is the inventory. I love when it shows you what to press and when in the beginning, and Skellboy Refractured did that beautifully. Sometimes, when there is nobody up to the task, old heroes have to rise from the grave to save the day Crush your enemies and make good use of their guts - literally, as you can augment Skippy. The game-play was easy for these old fingers to learn, but challenging enough for the game to not be too easy. “…did wish there had been earlier development of the story (in Skellboy Refractured)…” I did wish there had been earlier development of the story but felt that it wasn’t enough to detract from the game much. In all honesty, I got stuck in the story trying to get through the torture chamber too soon without a pumpkin light with nary a wiki in sight (or so I thought), but that is a story for another time. I didn’t get very far into the story because I wanted to get this review out. Therefore, the story for this game gave me quite a few chuckles at the cheeky nature of the cute humor. You play Skippy the multi-functional hero that can utilize the bodies of his enemies and some pillaged swag to up his game throughout his quest to rid the kingdom of evil once and for all. Skellboy Refractured was right in my wheelhouse, and I love UmaikiGames for it. Squarumon has sent his monsters to inhabit the realm after a love scorned, and you are the undead that can stop them. Play as Skippy, the square, flexible skeleton in this cute Action-RPG, to keep a heartbroken court magician from destroying the world. Skellboy Refractured was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, and there’s plenty to do to keep you busy.
